After Sridevi’s death, Haasan himself revealed the truth behind it in a note titled ‘Sridevi’s 28 avatars’ at his memorial service. Kamal Haasan mentioned that he and Sridevi were close friends and the latter’s mother often asked him to marry her daughter. However, the actor revealed that he always refused the offer as he considered Sridevi as his family member and he could not marry her. In his words:
“Her mother and I often discussed Sridevi’s marriage options and she used to joke with me that maybe I should marry her daughter. I would laugh and say that if that happened, Sri and I would drive each other so crazy that I would have to send him home the next day! Kamal Haasan first met Sridevi on the sets of the Tamil film Moondru Mudichu in 1976 when she was barely 13 years old. Since the actor had just stepped into the film industry, Haasan trained an assistant film director with him. They soon became good friends. Later, Kamal and Sridevi acted in many love scenes in their films which made their fans believe that they are more than just actors. However, Haasan has often tried to end his dating rumors with Sridevi. In fact, Sridevi had a lot of respect for Kamal and used to call him ‘Sir’ till her last breath.

“I never believed in marriage. People get married because of peer pressure, but I don’t agree with the ‘herd mind’. I shouldn’t to be married I married for the comfort of my wives Vani was not alive and I was not strong enough to set foot. And society was such that Sarika and I could not book a hotel room alone, even though we had two daughters.”
